Diabetes Support Groups Are Good to Say the Least…

Support Groups

The moment we live in right now, presently, Diabetes is forever. There is no cure for Diabetes. Yes, we can be hopeful that there one day might be a cure but nobody is for sure so we have to live in the moment, day to day and manage Diabetes successfully.
That is why Diabetes Support Groups are a valuable resource. Whether you have had Diabetes for many years or were diagnosed yesterday, a support group can help you.
Support groups unite people who live with Diabetes and their family members in a sense of community providing them with up-to-date diabetes information, educational resources and support.
Attending meetings is a way to compliment what you learn from your health care team and motivate you towards better daily Diabetes management. Each meeting usually features a talk initiated by the instructor or the people with comments, questions, and general discussion that come into play. Sometimes, a guest speaker or an expert in the field of Diabetes may be part of the group as well.

One-to-One talk
If there are some things that you as a diabetic want to talk about but feel hesitant or uncomfortable about mentioning it in front of the group, feel free to ask the person who is running the group if they’d be available to talk to you after the class and/or to set up a time and date to meet personally to discuss what you need to express. The instructor/mentor will be more than happy to sit and meet with you one-on-one especially if they are a diabetic him/her self. Always remember that you have options and resources to help cope and manage your diabetes even if its just the emotional and mental aspects of dealing with diabetes. There are many caring people with diabetes and the instructor/mentor/person running the group is there for you. Therefore, feel free to open up and express what you’re feeling because it will be kept confidential and two diabetics talking to each other about the positive, negative, and indifferent issues brings a sense of understanding, acceptance, happiness, resolution and usually “feel good feelings.” You’ll be surprised how refreshed, renewed, and revived you feel every time you finish speaking with another diabetic about issues. It’s nice to know that you can have your head cleared for a little while and truly know there are others exactly like you with very similar thoughts and issues that want to get it out and that we have to deal with everyday. When you see, hear, and know that there really is another diabetic going through the same things you go through, it makes a lot of people feel so overjoyed and okay with themselves and diabetes. Isn’t that what it’s all about? :)
